Staff Picks
APLS staff members are often asked what books or videos or other items they like. As a rule, the library works with the patron to find what that person likes to read or watch. We have many resources that compare authors or works with others to help recommend items.
Nevertheless, we have our favorites too, and have been asked about them. Over the next few months, we will introduce you to some of them. For the month of April, three APLS staff members were asked to share their choices!

Starter Villain by John Scalzi
Chosen by Sheila Heimann
Down on his luck Charlie is a disgruntled substitute teacher. He would love to buy the local pub, but has little to no chance of getting a loan, and might not have the knowledge and skills to run it if he did.
Suddenly, he inherits his long-lost uncle's criminal empire and lair on a volcanic island. He is totally out of his depth, dealing with a beautiful uber-efficient assistant, henchmen, evil super-criminals, typing cats, unionized dolphins, explosions, betrayals, and the mysterious whales who are circling the island.
Will Charlie become a criminal mastermind? Will he even survive?
I think this book is perfect for fans of Carl Hiaasen, but with a sci-fi twist.

Night Animals by Gianna Marino
Chosen by Robin Emenhiser
The book is about a group of animals are running from "night animals" just like themselves but do not realize it until the bat tells them they too are night animals.
This book is a little scary but also funny. The cast of characters skunk, bear, wolf, and possum are scared of the other night animals until bat reminds them that they are Night Animals too!
I love the characters, their reactions to the other night animals especially the Possum because he is always doing what possums do best and that is passing out! This is fun to read to the kids because I always highlight the possum and tell them to keep their eye on him. They love it!
